Established in the year 1966, Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Portblair, is a premier centre of education in Portblair , Andaman & Nicobar. Functioning under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, the vidyalaya was founded under the aegis of Kendriya Vidyalya Sangathan. It falls under the civil sector and strives to fulfill the educational requirement of Central Government employees and others on priority basis. Sharing with other Kendriya Vidyalayas all over India certain characteristic features, it is a miniature India, endeavouring to foster and develop in young minds feelings of national integration and universal brotherhood. The school comes under the Kolkata region of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.This school has got a number of awards in the field of education i.e. "Exellance in Education" Award by the Directorate of Education, Andaman and Nikobar Islands - Administration and recently Award of "Best School of Andaman" for the session 2008-09 by the Directorate of Education, Andaman and Nikobar Islands - Administration.
